A Few Christmas Favorites

With 20 shopping days left until Christmas I thought I’d share some of my most favorite finds this season. I started my shopping early this year and am so relieved to say everything is purchased and wrapped….Christmas cards are next on the list!

I recently just posted about the AMAZING partnership between Target and Neiman Marcus, and went to my local Target to check out what they had to offer. Lucky for me, my target had everything in stock…I had heard that the Target in Chicago and other major cities had people lining up to make their purchases and a lot had sold out overnight online. Luxe items at a reasonable price will have shoppers and fashionista’s buying this stuff faster than you can say Santa. My favs include:

Tory Burch Beverage Container $24.99 this is adorable…and it’s Tory Burch.
Tory Burch Printed Beverage Container

Brian Atwood REAL Leather Gloves $49.99 (Retail at Neiman Marcus or Barneys they are $295)
Brian Atwood Leather Gloves

Marc Jacobs Pouch $69.99 I like the Gunmetal color the best. This pouch is fairly large which is nice; it’s not just a coin purse!

I could seriously go on and on about Target but here are a few other gift ideas from a few other stores. And by gift ideas I mean, one for you and one for me. J

This Pottery Barn Faux Sheepskin Throw is so comfortable. My boys love wrapping up and snuggling in it and right now it’s on sale for $79!

Best Spray Tan ~Suburbs

This one is especially for my local ladies. As you know, most of my posts revolve around my adventures in Chicago to find the best food, facials, colorists, spray tans, etc.   Well, I am happy to report I have found the perfect spray tan right in my backyard! I have to start by saying I have traveled far and wide for a good spray tan. My first experience was in New York when I was there for work years ago and attempted the spray booth.  Think Ross on “Friends”….maybe worse, definitely worse.  Next was in L.A. when I had someone spray me at a hotel I was staying at. Marginal at best, it didn’t last long, and it was way more money than I would have otherwise spent. I previously posted about a great place in Chicago, but it is not convenient to drive that far for a spray tan that lasts a week…especially with these gas prices.

So here it is, THEE BEST spray tan I have ever had is right here in Woodstock at Renew Skin Spa. I have gone to this spa for facials, microdermabrasion, and other services and they have always done a wonderful job. I recently got their monthly email announcing they have the latest technology in spray tan called Versa Sunless Tan. It is an airbrush system that a technician sprays you with. They offer the pre-pH balance spray, the tan solution spray, and then the post moisturizer that locks the tan in and the very best part was that the solution spray and air that comes out is HEATED. YES, comfortable and warm ladies. If any of you have had a spray tan then you know it’s cold. There is nothing more uncomfortable than standing mostly naked in front of a stranger and being blasted with both a cold mist and cold air.

The color of the Versa Spray at Renew Skin Spa was natural and had a great glow, it doesn’t smell, and you can shower after 4 hours. For $35 this is a steal and right now they are running a special 4 for $100. I did some research and called other spa’s that offered this type of spray tan, including both New York and LA, and the tans were $75 EACH! So this is definitely a great deal. This is perfect for all of the fall festivities upon us and with winter soon approaching and the pale skin setting in, this is a great pick me up…. if even not for a special occasion.

Call Tiffany at Renew to schedule your appointment. (815) 338-7546

Green Tie Ball Chicago 2012

As most of you know, I love Chicago and think it’s the greatest city by far. I have been everywhere from New York to L.A. and have always had an appreciation when I return home to the clean and beautifully landscaped streets of Chicago. I’ve always taken notice of the landscape and flowers that line Michigan Avenue and other various parts of the city but never realized the huge effort and fundraising that goes into beautifying the city. After this weekend I know now who is behind all of this hard work. For twenty-six years Chicago Gateway Green has been dedicated to greening and beautifying Chicago’s expressways, gateways and neighborhoods. Who knew? This weekend I was fortunate enough to attend Gateway Green’s signature fundraiser, the Green Tie Ball and amazing cannot even sum up the effort that was put into this event.

This year’s theme was Alice in Wonderland, which is fitting to celebrate Gateway Greens accomplishments in keeping Chicago, our very own wonderland, beautiful and magical in its own unique way. If you have ever been to a Chicago restaurant in the summer and sat outside soaking up the sun and sights around, or shopped Michigan Avenue in the winter and saw the twinkle of the lights that line the streets you know exactly what I am talking about.

Upon arriving, we walked the green carpet and were greeted by green bunnies, and were handed glasses of pink champagne. I was there 5 minutes and already a fan! The night couldn’t have been more gorgeous either, it was perfect party weather. We walked a pathway where the Mad Hatter rode a moving dj booth that blew a constant stream of bubbles. To say this event was visually stimulating would be an understatement. We entered a tent to find over 70 Chicago restaurants serving up some of their most popular dishes. There were even women dressed in Alice in Wonderland attire set in the middle of tables and serving the food directly to you, wondrous indeed. My favorites were the burgers from Rockit Burger Bar, bacon wrapped dates from Hubbard Inn, and pierogi’s from Flo & Santos. We sipped on Real Russian Vodka cocktails and Goose Island beer. Everyone knows I am a fan of desserts and there were plenty of those to go around. Teens from the After School Matters Culinary Arts program at Bethlehem Lutheran Church were on-hand to display and serve more than 700 Alice in Wonderland-themed cookies and cakes they made specifically for the event.

Pete Wentz was on hand and hit stage to keep the party going long into the night, and the dance floor was packed. Cover band South of 80 closed out the night with a live show of songs including covers of Mumford & Sons, Dave Matthews & Green Day. Co-emcee of the night Ryan Chiaverini hopped on stage for the band’s last song to join them on the guitar and vocals for a cover of “Sweet Home Alabama.” Other entertainment included magician Robert Charles, who did some amazing card tricks for Beau and I. How he turned a napkin into a hat, and picked my ace of spades out of thin air is beyond me, and I was watching him closely, but then again…he managed to have Bono baffled while preforming for him in the past as well.

As a bonus a very good friend of mine Matt Mansueto (see his amazing photos here) was on hand as an official photographer for the Green Tie Ball, so it was fun to see him and spend time with he and his wife Kari who has been my best friend since we were 14 years old.

Cotton candy on green glow sticks and Garrett’s Popcorn were available as we exited as well as my favorite frozen yogurt food cart Star Fruit, rated #21 healthiest food carts in the US. Their honey granola is my favorite!

From the people watching, to the entertainment, to the food and drinks this is by far the best event I have ever been to and look forward to going in the years to come. I hope you can join me next year in donating by purchasing your tickets and celebrating such a great cause. The next time you go to Chicago and take in the magnificent sights, you will now know who is behind keeping it the beautiful place we love to call home.

Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Peplum

Finally, the arrival of September and Pumpkin Spice Latte’s…I can hardly contain my excitement. The only thing that would make this season even better is if my allergies were not killing me and it was not 90 degrees every day. I hear tomorrow it’s supposed to cool off. I can’t wait to open my windows again.

Monday was a glorious day in Chicago, not too hot or cold or windy. Just perfect and a wonderful day to take my little guy for a stroll, my first stop was Topshop. If you have never been you should check it out.

These are my favorite finds from Topshop

Pearl Collar Peplum Top $64

I am loving peplum, peplum everything. If you have never worn it, try it on. It enhances curves in all the right areas and is very lady like.

This Basic Peplum Skirt $68

I found this at J Crew at the 900 N. Michigan Avenue building.

Tippi Polka Dot Sweater $89.50

This necklace has been ALL over the television the last week. From Emily Maynard to Elisabeth Hasselbeck and right now it’s on sale! $159.99 (It was 228.00)

Although I wish I could look Forever 21, I am glad I am not. I like getting older and smarter, and against my better judgment I stopped in XXI and actually found some cute things for a steal!

This skirt is pretty basic, but not bad for only $6.80!

The picture is not the greatest but this mesh dot sleeved top is really cute. I saw one by Stella McCartney for over $1000, but this one is only $17.80.

Lastly, Bloomingdale’s had these hot, hot, hot (even though I like cool, cool, cool) Tom Ford (a.k.a unaffordable) polarized Charles Sunglasses. They are gorgeous. $420 Tom Ford Polarized Charles Sunglasses

Be Bright Pink

A few months ago I received an email from a friend that had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a married mother of two boys, she is young, she works out, eats well, and she is full of life. It just seemed unreal that she was about to enter the fight of her life. Not only that, but she is the type of person who doesn’t want anyone to make a big deal out of anything, she is strong beyond belief…and still fighting. She lost her hair from chemotherapy and ran 5 miles that same week.

In the weeks prior to receiving this email from my friend, I had been having some pain in that area and went to see my doctor. My doctor thought I was too young for a mammogram, but because she knows me so well, she scheduled me one to put my mind at ease and see what was happening inside.  The night before I was nervous, scared of the pain (I had heard it hurts), scared that something would be found, and then opened my email to find the note from my friend who had just been diagnosed.  I didn’t sleep at all that night, thinking of my friend, her husband, her boys, and my appointment the following afternoon.

The following day my husband went with me to my appointment to help put my mind at ease. Truthfully, the mammogram was not painful at all.  It was quick, painless, the tech made it as comfortable as possible, and better yet, I received my results the same day that everything was in fact, fine. Mind put at ease for sure. I prayed and was thankful, but thought of all the women I know who had not received the same news and then became overwhelmingly sad.

A few months later I connected with Lindsay Avner founder of Bright Pink, the only national non-profit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women while providing support for high-risk individuals. I was touched to hear her story and thrilled to attend her event, “Pink Fling” at Quay in Chicago last month.  I so want to talk about the food and all of the lovely pink fashions, but for this post….all I want to say is, get your boobies checked! And check out http://brightpink.org/home/.

Next month Bright Pink is hosting a fashion show at Saks Fifth Avenue Chicago to raise funds and awareness for the cause. I would love to see you there!

Young, Fabulous, & Broke

Thanks again to Emily from the Bachelorette I have been craving some ombre clothing and recently have fallen in love with Young, Fabulous, & Broke. When I say those words I think, “A girl in her twenties that went to L.A. for a career and can barely make rent”….however, the style is not reflective of that, especially the prices.  The modal/spandex blend is extremely comfortable and flattering. These dresses have been hot, hot, hot, and sell out quickly.  Here are my three favorite dresses:

Arroyo Ombre Maxi Dress $233

This dress runs really large. I found a blue/beige color combo at Neiman Marcus for $103 and it sold out in 10 minutes!

Maule Maxi $176

I cannot say enough about this dress. It is so comfortable and super flattering with its side ruching. It has a side slit that makes it super sexy (in a classy way) and the tank is also shaped so nicely for the décolleté area. It runs long which is great for tall girls, but my tailor was able to make it the perfect length for me.

Eureka Ombre Dress $174

I LOVE this short ombre dress. It is super-hot, which goes hand in hand with this weather we have been having. Again with the ruching…a girl’s best friend!

A little tip: This brand can be found on Piperlime.com and often they run great sales, recently they sent me a 40% off coupon. It’s worth getting on their mailing list. :-) Hope everyone is staying cool and enjoying summertime! Hard to believe it’s half over!

Nordstrom Pre-Fall Sale

It is mid-July so that long awaited time of year has finally arrived for me…and by that I mean the Nordstrom Pre-Fall Anniversary sale of course. I absolutely love fall; the crisp air, pumpkin spice latte’s, trips to go apple picking, and boots & leggings. I know, I know, after the brutally cold winters where we are trapped inside our homes from months at a time, fall is also the reminder that summer is officially over. And that depresses some people. I have actually read fellow bloggers who say they hate fall. I think that’s a little harsh as I defend my season. With temperatures in the 90′s and even 100′s it is hard to think about fall fashion and even harder to enjoy summer. I am not a fan of oppresive heat.  Anyway, every summer Nordstrom pulls out the latest fall fashions and offers them at a discounted price during their anniversary sale, and we are talking deep discounts on items that rarely go on-sale, like Chloe Handbags. This year I got my early access invite (because I have their credit card) and decided to stop in with my two children (big mistake) to see what fall fashions were going to look like. Inside every department were huge curtains guarding the merchandise and you had to show your card to enter. Ideally they wanted me to be working with a sales associate but I am a girl on a mission and did not have time to get into deep discussions or try on a bunch of looks, mainly because I know what I wanted and because of my two year old in the stroller that was not exactly cooperating.

Here are some of my favorite items and must haves for my favorite season:

First up, this Hinge Quilted Leather Jacket: Buttery soft and fitted to flatter any body type this is a perfect pair to any outfit. The quilted leather is very reminiscent of a Channel style that retails for $5700. The Nordstrom version is only $229.90 during the sale. Also shown paired with the jacket is a Bellatrix black and white zig-zag top. I tried on this look and it was very easy to wear. The top is only $59.90 during the sale and can be dressed up or down depending on what you prefer.

Next are two very comfortable and versatile boots for the season:

Vince Camuto “Brooklee” Boot During Sale: $169.90 After Sale: $258.95

And

Aldo “Fastrost”” Boot
During Sale: $86.90 After Sale: $129.95

Judging by the Nordstrom Beauty Exclusives plum is definitely going to be an “in” color as far as make-up is concerned. Check out this limited edition Dior Show Plum Color Mascara.

LOOK what I found! My favorite green Alexis Bittar earrings as seen on Bachelorette Emily this season. Sneaky, huh? She must have been granted early, early access and for some reason I cannot find an image of them so you will have to click my link to view. But these look similar to the others she wore. I think most of her jewelry this season was Alexis Bittar.

Lastly, and I error on the side of caution posting this because I know a lot of rabbit lovers….but while shopping my 11 year old son (today is his birthday) handed me this fur vest. Actually, he was smothering his face in it telling me how amazing it was and that I had to have it. While I humored him by trying it on I have to say it was super soft and a very trendy fashion statement. I am not one to judge those who do or do not love fur for various reasons and have the utmost respect for those that follow a complete lifestyle of no-fur and eating no animals or animal by-products. However,  I am not one of those people. I happen to enjoy a good steak every now and again. With that being said, check out this June Genuine Rabbit Fur Vest.

Happy Shopping, Happy Friday, and Happy Birthday to the sweetest son of all time.

Bachelorette – Chicago Style

I was super excited that on tonight’s episode of The Bachelorette one of Emily’s suitors had his hometown date in Chicago. I always get excited when cameras come to a place I am familiar with…home. It showed the two of them meeting in Chicago in front of the famed water tower of Chicago located off of Michigan Avenue in front of The Park Hyatt, one of my favorite hotels. My husband and I were married in Chicago and had one of our group wedding photos taken in front of it. Please note; after walking 4 blocks to get this shot the skies opened up and it started pouring. Luckily, all of us made it back, hair and makeup still intact. In fact, I learned rain on your wedding day is good luck!

Back to The Bachelorette, have I mentioned I love her wardrobe? Well, I do. As a matter of fact I realized I already had some of the very things she has been seen wearing on the show. Here are my favorites!

I love stripes and snagged this on a super sale at Bloomingdale’s a few months ago – Joie Aceline Silk Top

All I can say about this is, I love Alexis Bittar…everything. I saw these earrings on Emily and was obsessing over them for a good week, partly because my favorite color is green.

Since Chicago has been hotter than blazes the last few weeks, here is an ADORABLE Betsey Johnson bikini she was sporting in one of the earlier episodes.

Nightcap Clothing One Sleeve Dress: Whether it be deep pink, plum purple or emerald green, Emily’s been spotted in all these jewel tones. I have also seen this on some of the Real Housewives including Teresa Giudice. Find a one-sleeve mini in your favorite color to channel your inner Bachelorette. (P.S. I could not stand this guy in the picture she was on the date with…so glad she cut him loose!)

Here are a pair of affordable Kendra Scott earrings. These also come in various colors. Kendra Scott Danielle Agate Earrings – $60

If you are going for a golden goddess look, this is the dress to achieve that; FREE PEOPLE Sequin Slip Dress. Note; must have amazing spray tan done and be wearing MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Glow Powder.

So, with only a few episodes left…who do you think Emily will pick? I want her to pick Sean or Jef, but have a feeling she will pick Ari. And for some reason I don’t see that lasting, for her sake I hope it does. She seems so sweet and I know how hard it is to be a single mom, I hope this time she finds love!

Strand Saver

I think the hair Gods decided to throw me a bone recently and realized I was in desperate need of some TLC for my locks when I received a gem of a sample in the mail. I love when I get freebies in the mail from Sephora or with other orders I place!

Before I get to that, let’s talk hair for a minute. Admittedly, I am a bit neurotic and over the years have not been kind to my hair. When I was a teen I had long, thick, semi-wavy, luscious hair that I would even go as far as saying I would give up the pinky on my right hand (I am left handed) to have again. Sadly, I caved to the 90’s trends of bad perms, bad hair color, and oooh the best yet…let’s dye my naturally chestnut brown hair blonde. Hey, why not? I took for granted that my hair would always grow, would always be healthy, and most of all would stay thick. Unfortunately, and after countless bad hair decisions; like the time a stylist bleached out the front of my hair and while processing, I scratched the heck out of the itchy foil that it broke all the hair off in front. (Insert sad face) Or, when I was pregnant and allowed myself to be my ex-sister in-laws guinea pig when she got her first hair job and she dyed my hair jet black, let me rephrase; witch black. NO, I did not ask for that and why I thought it would be a good idea to let someone who I am not even sure liked me touch my hair while 8 months pregnant is beyond me. Clearly my judgment was clouded in those days. Oh let’s not forget the trips to expensive salons only to have Edward Scissor Hands bust out 3 or 4 sets of shears at once and do a number (read: semi-mullet) on me. And to top ALL of that off, I am really picky. NO red, no ash, no thinning sheers, (why do they love the thinning shears, NO woman willing wants thin hair!) more natural looking color with shine and dimension, a cut with bounce and body that will look exactly the way it is styled when I do it myself….is all of this too much to ask? It must be, because aside from having to mortgage my house to maintain that from the expensive salons in the city that actually can deliver it, typically it just does not happen.

So I have made a decision, I am not going to let anyone touch a hair on this head, for a while. I had a hair appointment in Chicago booked yesterday that I knew was going to be $$$$ so I did the responsible thing and paid the electric bill instead and decided to wait until my hair gets really bad, which by my definition is today…..but I am waiting.

Back to my sample, my lifesaver in the interim, my new hair gem that will hopefully get me though these next few weeks or months my hair is on strike and has asked to be left alone, I present to you Ouidad! Known for being the curly hair experts (I do not have curly hair) their products have made such a difference in my hair. Especially lately with all of this Chicago heat. Ouidad has refreshed my locks, given them some life without weighing my hair down, and has made my dry ends silky smooth. If you have damaged or dry hair the Ouidad 12 Minute Deep Treatment Intensive Repair is a lifesaver. It is a little on the pricey side at $25 for a 2 oz bottle but it is a miracle worker.
Ouidad Deep Treatment

I love this entire line and also hooked on the Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo & Conditioner.
Ouidad Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo

I feel like I am going through withdrawls by staying out of the hair salon for this long, but I will let you know when I find my way back there and how it goes. Hope everyone had a great weekend and if you have a must-have hair product please share it!

It’s a Happy Birthday Giveaway!

Do you ever notice that as you get older birthdays seem to lose their luster?  Especially if you have kids, life doesn’t stop just because you were born on this blessed day x number of years ago. There will still be laundry that needs to be done, diapers to be changed, and granite cleaner that needs to be sprayed. Of course you get the wonderful calls, cards, and treats from friends and family that make it special, and all of that is what counts and matters.  As a matter of fact, my husband surprised me with an early gift last night of yoga lessons and as a bonus he agreed to go with me to a session, what a guy! Which brings me to the question; what is the perfect gift? …and I mean really what and how would be the perfect way to celebrate the day your life began. Yes, world peace, a genie with 3 wishes, furry kittens, ect, ect,…are all wonderful thoughts but let’s be real. Hrm, Channing Tatum or this guy from True Blood fanning me with fig leaves would be a good start or better yet, they could clean my house and change diapers while I lie in the sun and read a book…50 Shades of Grey, perhaps? (And no I haven’t read it yet, my friends are disappointed in me, but I promise I will get to it!)

So, because it is cause for celebration, I am doing my first blog giveaway! I love giving presents and thought it would be the perfect time to have a contest. So, here is what you need to do: First, make sure that you “LIKE” me on Facebook and share me with friends (if you have not already) http://www.facebook.com/#!/TheQueensTake   and post what your perfect birthday gift would be.  It’s that easy, one lucky winner will be selected to win one of my favorite new finds; this lightweight summer scarf. The best part is it’s handmade and from Sweden!

Good luck and cheers to growing older! I am actually enjoying becoming wiser and more comfortable in my skin as the years pass. As my 99 year old grandmother says, “Age is just a number, choosing to wake up everyday with a smile on your face is what keeps you young!” She is one wise woman, and fashionable too!
